Our origines and mission

The Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill evolved from the Trappist monastery of Mariannhill, founded by Abbot Francis Pfanner in South Africa on the 26th of December 1882. Soon these contemplative monks began missionary work among the indigenous people and opened many missions further and further away from their original monastery.

Since the active life of a missionary was not compatible with the strict Trappist rule, the Apostolic See separated the monastery and its mission-stations from the Trappist Order in a decree of 2nd of February 1909 and thus prepared the way for the gradual evolution of a new Religious Missionary community, the Missionaries of Mariannhill.

Acknowledging our historical and spiritual roots, we are both Religious and Missionaries who live in community. As Religious, our Trappist roots lead us back to St. Benedict, and as Missionaries we are connected with the early missionaries of Mariannhill and their tireless leader Abbot Francis Pfanner. The Benedictine motto of ‘Ora et Labora’ combines these two traits of our Congregational history and is our legacy.

In the foundation of our Congregation the lay Brothers played an outstanding role by being faithful to the charism and by their skill and labour. Through their contribution the Monastery with its mission stations became centres of faith and development.

The Congregation has the task

** to cooperate in the spreading of the Gospel among those who do not yet or no longer believe in Christ;

** to help establish, build up and renew the Local Church under the authority of the local bishop;

** to work for justice and peace, the liberation of people and the integrity of creation;

** to offer assistance and solidarity to individuals and groups who are at the margins of society;

** to promote ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue in order to give a common and better witness to the unifying power of the Gospel;

** to keep alive and deepen among the faithful the sense of responsibility for the whole Church;

** to promote vocations for the missionary tasks of the Church and support it spiritually and materially.

Nos origines et mission

La Congrégation des Missionnaires de Mariannhill tire son origine du monastère trappiste de Mariannhill, fondé par le Père Abbé François Pfanner en Afrique du Sud, le 26 décembre 1882. Ces moines contemplatifs entreprirent bientôt un travail missionnaire parmi les indigènes et ouvrirent des missions de plus en plus éloignées de leur monastère d’origine.

Comme la vie active d’un missionnaire n’était pas compatible avec la stricte observance trappiste, le Siège apostolique sépara le monastère et ses missionnaires de l’Ordre trappiste par un décret du 2 février 1909, ouvrant ainsi la voie à la formation graduelle d’une nouvelle communauté religieuse missionnaire, les Missionnaires de Mariannhill.

Conscients de nos racines historiques et spirituelles, nous sommes à la fois des religieux et des missionnaires qui vivent en communauté. Religieux, nos racines trappistes nous font remonter à saint Benoît; missionnaires, nous nous rattachons aux premiers missionnaires de Mariannhill et à leur infatigable leader, le Père Abbé François Pfanner. La devise bénédictine « Ora et Labora » réunit ces deux traits de l’histoire de notre Congrégation et fait partie de notre patrimoine.

Lors de la fondation de notre Congrégation, les frères laïcs ont joué un rôle éminent par leur fidélité au charisme, leurs talents et leur travail. Grâce à leur apport, le Monastère et ses postes de mission sont devenus des centres de foi et de développement.

Notre Congrégation est devenue un institut clérical de droit pontifical le 21 mars 1936. Ses membres ont reçu le mandat de proclamer la Bonne Nouvelle « Ad Gentes », comme cela a été désigné par la suite.

La Congrégation a pour tâche

** de coopérer à l’annonce de l’Évangile chez ceux qui ne croient pas encore au Christ ou qui ne croient plus en lui;

** d’aider à l’établissement et au renouveau de l’Église locale;

** de travailler pour la justice et la paix, la libération des personnes et l’intégrité de la création;

** d’offrir aide et solidarité aux individus et groupes qui vivent en marge de la société;

** de promouvoir l’œcuménisme et le dialogue interreligieux afin de mieux témoigner en commun du pouvoir unificateur de l’Évangile;

** de garder vivant et d’approfondir chez les fidèles le sens de leur responsabilité à l’endroit de l’Église universelle;

** de promouvoir les vocations aux tâches missionnaires de l’Église et de soutenir celles-ci sur le plan spirituel et matériel.

Two important events, concerning the whole Congregation must be mentioned. First, in 1990, Fr. Yves La Fontaine, a Canadian, is elected as Superior General of the whole Mariannhill Congregation. And, in 1996, the General Chapter of the Congregation is held in the MARIANNHILL RESIDENCE in Saint-Augustin, near Quebec City.

In 2007, a NGO called Solidarity Distribution is established and its focus is on the distribution of fair-trade coffee and chocolate. In 2023, this organization takes also over our work with the migrants and refugees. You can find more information in following this link:

In 2024, with the diminishing number of confreres in Canada, our last property where we were all living is sold to Sherbrooke University and to a private school which will continue our work of education. We now are living in a facility where 5 other religious congregations grouped together to be able to meet the various needs of their aging members.

In 2025, there are eleven Mariannhill Missionaries working in the Province of Quebec. A group of 15 associate members is also helping the Community to accomplish its missionary mandate.

Deux événements importants, concernant toute la Congrégation, méritent d'être mentionnés. Tout d'abord, en 1990, le Père Yves La Fontaine, Canadien, est élu Supérieur général de toute la Congrégation de Mariannhill. Ensuite, en 1996, le Chapitre général de la Congrégation se tient à la Résidence Mariannhill à Saint-Augustin, près de Québec.

En 2007, une ONG du nom de Distribution Solidaire est crée, spécialisée dans la distribution de café et de chocolat équitables. En 2023, cette organisation prend en charge notre travail auprès des migrants et des réfugiés. Vous trouverez plus d'informations en suivant ce lien :

En 2024, face à la diminution du nombre de confrères au Canada, notre dernière propriété où nous vivions tous est vendue à l'Université de Sherbrooke et à une école privée qui poursuivra notre œuvre d'éducation. Nous vivons maintenant dans un établissement où cinq autres congrégations religieuses se sont regroupées pour répondre aux divers besoins de leurs membres plus âgés.

En 2025, ce sont onze missionnaires de Mariannhill qui œuvrent toujours au Québec. Un groupe de 15 membres associés aide également la communauté à accomplir son mandat missionnaire.
